President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas.

The Minister briefed the President on his visit to the United States of America on 6 to 10 March and his meetings with high officials there. The President and the Minister also talked about the upcoming NATO Summit on 3-4 April and the EU-US Summit to be held on 5 April in Prague, and the position Lithuania should take in these two fora.

President Adamkus underlined the need to address problems related to energy projects, and to keep the attention of international partners on the project of constructing a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania, now that doubts arise concerning previous commitments to build a power plant.

According to the President, absence of a clear energy strategy creates the possibility to question Lithuania’s commitment, declared publicly, to retain its status as a nuclear power country and to implement related projects of electricity connections.

As pointed out by President Adamkus, this pushes Lithuania’s aspiration to break its energy isolation and dependence on Eastern suppliers away into indefinite future.

Foreign Affairs Minister Ušackas also informed the President of the financing problems encountered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during this period of economic downturn.
