President Valdas Adamkus extended his congratulations to His Holiness Benedict XVI on the occasion of four years of Pontificate.

President Adamkus underlined that a strong Catholic Church was very important in the world of today where there was ever more hostility and ever less belief in eternal values.

"Your pastoral mission, wisdom, and devotion to God and people is an example for the Christians of Lithuania and the world," Mr. Adamkus srote in his letter.

He expressed his firm belief that the words in the homily delivered by Pope Bendict XVI at the celebration of Palm Sunday and the XXIII World Youth Day, "The more we can make some sacrifice, out of love for the great truth and the great love, out of love for the truth and for God's love, the greater and richer life becomes," would take root in the hearts and minds of the young people of Lithuania and serve as a guiding light for the young generation in creating their future and the common good.

President Adamkus wished His Holiness good health and strength in discharging the important duties of his pastoral mission.
