President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia Mr. Bogdan Benko.

Accepting letters of credence from the Slovenian Ambassador, the Head of State noted that belonging to a single family of European nations had shaped the common interests of Lithuania and Slovenia and forged their effective political dialogue. "Our two countries share the same approach to many issues, such as the relationship between the European Union and Russia, Eastern Neighborhood Policy or the strengthening of EU energy security. I am deeply convinced that high-level visits by Slovenian officials to Lithuania would help further enhance and expand our bilateral dialogue," the President said.

"I congratulate Slovenia on its successful presidency of the European Union. You have demonstrated that even a small country can successfully address serious problems and deal with such complex issues on the EU agenda as energy security or setting a mandate for negotiations with Russia. We must continue working together to successfully realize the issues that you have helped include in the negotiating mandate with Russia," the President said further and expressed confidence that Slovenia's experience would also help Lithuania to prepare for EU presidency.

President Adamkus underlined that Lithuania and Slovenia and their societies were linked not only by their rich historical past, but also by their tireless and relentless fights for freedom and peace. According to the President, today we must also focus on our neighbors in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Mediterranean Sea region, and the South Caucasus, offering them support in strengthening democracy and carrying through effective reforms. The President said he was convinced this was the basis for the success of a competitive and unified European Union, open to its neighbors.

"I am delighted that economic cooperation between our two countries is developing fruitfully, with the volume of trade between Lithuania and Slovenia growing and expanding. Regrettably, bilateral investments are not extensive," Mr. Adamkus pointed out and invited Ambassador Bogdan Benko to encourage a greater interest by Slovenian companies in the Lithuanian market and to acquaint Slovenian business people with investment options in Lithuania.

During the credentials ceremony, the President also expressed belief that Lithuania and Slovenia would continue to be united by their shared aspiration to create a secure and peaceful world and be responsible participants of international processes.

President Adamkus wished the Ambassador the best of success in discharging the important duties of his mission.
