President welcomes Brazilian decision to abolish visas for Lithuanian citizens

Published: 19 January 2009 y., Monday

President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus sent a letter to the President of the Federal Republic of Brazil, Mr. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, to thank him and all Brazil authorities on behalf of himself and all people of Lithuania for the final completion of the internal procedures necessary for the abolishment of visa regime vis-à-vis Lithuanian citizens.

Lithuania's President writes in the letter he recalls exceptionally warmly his visit to Brazil, his cordial meeting with Brazil's Head of State, and his conversations with Brazil's Congress and Senate leaders. The President of Lithuania thanks heartily his Brazilian counterpart for keeping the promise to open the doors for the free movement of Lithuanian citizens.

President Adamkus underlines he is especially glad that the common goal of removing barriers to people-to-people contacts has been implemented. “Elimination of Brazilian visas offers to our people the opportunity of unrestricted mutual travels. This is of utmost importance for a stronger friendship between Lithuania and Brazil, and a good news for the Lithuanian community in Brazil which is one of the largest communities in the whole of Latin America. I have no doubt more and more Lithuanian citizens interested in your overwhelmingly beautiful and diverse country will make tourist and business trips to Brazil,” President Adamkus writes in the letter.

The President also writes he hopes visa elimination will give a new impetus for close relations between our countries and our people, and contribute to the implementation of Brazilian-European strategic partnership and to the development of cultural, academic and economic ties. According to the President, Lithuania and its people are happy about the new opportunities to foster friendship with Brazil.

President Adamkus invites Brazil's President to visit Lithuania this coming spring to join Lithuania in the celebration of the Millennium of its name.
