For the purpose of implementing one of the four operational priorities 2010, the Government has invited different experts, academic representatives, business pundits, analysts of political and economic developments to join the State Progress Council which is to mobilize the community in mapping Lithuania’s route into the near future and building its vision “Lithuania 2030”. The decision to set up the Progress Council was endorsed by the Cabinet meeting earlier today.

"This year we are marking the 20-th anniversary of March 11, which provides a great opportunity to bring people together to reflect on how Lithuania should look in another 20 years. I very much hope that the Progress Council will encourage the people to join in an energetic creative collaboration. If we want to be a good country for all to live, we all have to help create its future", – said Prime Minister Kubilius.

The State Progress Council will distil all the collected visionary ideas, which will later become a solid base for the most important Lithuanian strategic planning document Lithuania 2030. This strategy will set long-term development objectives and priorities, implementation guidelines and progress performance indicators. It should become a broad-based agreement on a long-term development of the country; it should be spared of the impact from individual or institutional interests or political developments.

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, who is chairing the Council, has noted that the 20th anniversary of the restoration of independent state finds Lithuania anchored safely in the international community and a member of the European Union and NATO, but still short of clear vision of the future, i.e. the Lithuanian "success formula" that would allow to continue on the road of progress in determination and courage, the values that have become intrinsic over one thousand years of the national history.
Most members of the Council will be outside the Government, representing business, academic community, public institutions, and arts. But it will also include Cabinet members, such as Ministers of Economy, Transport and Communications, Energy, Education and Science, Justice, Finance, Culture, as well as President`s advisers and Ambassadors.

The State Progress Council is the first step on the road to advancing the development process of the long-term progress strategy Lithuania 2030. An open forum Lithuania 2030 is expected to convene local government representatives, associated business structures, political parties, trade unions, NGOs and other interest groups. Idea Generation Platforms will be arranged to host debates on Lithuania`s long-term vision. Specific thematic working groups will be set up and informal discussion held. It has been several months now that an informal working group of creative society has been very energetic in doing its job.
