D. Tusk reiterated that Poland was keenly interested in the INPP and Polish-Lithuanian power bridge projects. The Lithuanian Prime Minister agreed to the acceleration of these projects as it would also secure Lithuania’s integration into UCTE.
The Prime Ministers agreed that it was necessary to ensure the smooth and successful operation of “Mažeikių nafta”. A. Kubilius promised that the Lithuanian Government would help address the logistical problems of “Mažeikių nafta”. Prime Ministers also approved of the necessity to speed up the implementation of strategic infrastructure projects “Via Baltica” and “Rail Baltica”.
It was also agreed to establish the Intellectuals Forum under the aegis of both Prime Ministers; it is expected that the Forum will discuss a wide range of historical and topical issues, not excluding the prospects for further relations between both countries as well.
Later in the meeting the Prime Ministers talked on the problems of ethnic minorities and agreed to common solution in that matter. The Polish Prime Minister promised to consider an option of making amendments to the legislation regulating the Polish Card issues. He promised to address the funding problems for Lithuanian schools in Seinai and Punsk. In his turn, the Lithuanian Prime Minister expressed his strong belief that the solution to the spelling options of Polish first and family names would be found in the near future.
D. Tusk accepted the Lithuanian Prime Minister’s invitation to visit Lithuania in the coming spring. It is planned that both Prime Ministers will visit Seinai and Punsk in Poland and Šalčininkai and Vilnius in Lithuania.
It was agreed to strike up a close political dialogue and a regular exchange of bilateral visits that would address not only topical bilateral issues but also lead to the joint action in the international forums, particularly in the European Union and NATO.
