Strategic partnership between Lithuania and Poland have contributed to the security in the whole continent, President Adamkus says

President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński who arrived in Lithuania on a one-day working visit.
 
Following the official welcoming ceremony for the President of Poland, the Heads of States exchanged decorations and gifts.

President Adamkus decorated President Kaczyński with the Order of Vytautas the Great with the Golden Collar, for his personal contribution to the development of relations between the two states and to the strengthening of political, cultural and people-to-people cooperation. Mrs. Maria Kaczyńska was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great.

President Lech Kaczyński decorated President Valdas Adamkus with the Grand Cross of the Order of Poland Reborn; Mrs. Alma Adamkienė was decorated with the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.

Lithuania's President made the Polish President a gift of a silver medal by Lithuanian artist Petras Repšys, dedicated to the first book published in the State of Lithuania in the Lithuanian language back in 1599; Mrs. Maria Kaczyńska was presented with a gift of an amber bead necklace. Lithuania's President got a gift of a collection of Polish silver coins, and Mrs. Alma Adamkienė, a hand-made china vase.

In their tête-à-tête meeting, the Presidents of Lithuania and Poland discussed bilateral relations, the possibilities of implementation of energy and infrastructure projects in the region, issues related to the European Union and NATO, also Eastern neighbourhood issues. The Heads of States also talked about the issue of national minorities.

President Adamkus thanked his Polish counterpart for his personal concern for Lithuania and for the development of mutual relations. Lithuania's leader expressed delight at the fact that over more than a decade both states have successfully entered into and strengthened their strategic partnership and established durable, strong and sustainable relations between people, businesses and the states.

According to President Adamkus, the strategic partnership between Lithuania and Poland and very good neighborly relations have contributed to the security and stability in the whole continent.

The President of the Republic of Poland underlined in response that the two nations needed each other very much.

President Adamkus pointed out that the two countries had done much to bring the European Union and its Eastern neighbors closer together and to help the latter on their path towards democracy, security, and European values.

Lithuania's leader expressed hope the governments and other public authorities of the two states would manage to achieve, in the near future, concrete results in implementing common energy and infrastructural projects of vital importance, such as electricity and gas bridges, Rail Baltica and Via Baltica, which were very much needed not only to Polish and Lithuanian people but also to the well-being and security in the whole region.

The President of Poland said he had repeatedly expressed his position that Poland and Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia must be connected by as many energy and infrastructural links as possible.

President Adamkus reassured President Kaczyński that Lithuania's strategic goal of building a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania remained. The President of Lithuania informed that a business model and a financing plan would be drawn up for the new nuclear power plant in the near future and would be delivered to Polish, Latvian and Estonian partners for their approval. Lithuania's President said he understood well Poland's interest in securing the supply of electricity to be generated in the nuclear power plant.

Talking about national minorities, President Adamkus underlined he always felt the Polish President's concern for his nationals living abroad.

The President expressed delight that Polish authorities informed and acknowledged to their parliamentarians that educational opportunities for Polish people in Lithuania were the best in the European Union and that this was a very high recognition.

The President said he truly believed the existing problems would be solved soon.

The meeting between the Presidents of Lithuania and Poland and the delegations led by them was followed by a ceremony of signing a Joint Statement of the Presidents of Lithuania and Poland.

After a joint press conference of the two Presidents, the President of Poland went to the Antakalnis Cemetery to honour the memory of those killed in the fight for Lithuania's independence and of Polish soldiers, and laid a wreath at their graves.

Later Poland's President had lunch with Lithuania's Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, following which the visiting President went go to the Rasų Cemetery to lay a wreath at the graves of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski and Dr. Jonas Basanavicius.

After lunch, the Polish President will meet with the Speaker of the Seimas Arūnas Valinskas and make a speech in the Seimas.

In the evening, President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus and Mrs. Alma Adamkienė will host dinner in the honour of the state visit of President Lech Kaczyński of the Republic of Poland and Mrs. Maria Kaczyńska in Lithuania.

Late at night, the Polish President and the delegation will leave for Warsaw.
