President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus accepted letters of credence from the Ambassador of Sweden Ms. Ulrika Cronenberg–Mossberg.

In the credentials ceremony, the President noted that the belonging to the single family of European nations and to the Baltic Sea region determines the common interests of Lithuania and Sweden.

President Adamkus noted further that Sweden was among Lithuania’s most important economic partners and that substantial Swedish business investments in Lithuania had contributed to the rapid growth of Lithuania's economy.

The President underlined the need to make a joint effort to keep the Baltic Sea region economies viable and competitive in this period of economic instability.

According to the President, one of the most important strategic objectives of the two countries is an electricity link between Lithuania and Sweden.

The Ambassador assured Lithuania's Head of State that for Sweden, too, cooperation in the field of energy was among the top priorities.  “I will make every offer to ensure that the construction of the electricity bridge between Lithuania and Sweden becomes a reality in the near future,” Ms. Ulrika Cronenberg – Mossberg underlined.

Mention was also made of the successful cooperation between Lithuania and Sweden in the field of environmental protection.  The President underlined that Lithuania and Sweden must continue working together in pursing the goal of preserving a clean and secure Baltic Sea for the present and future generations.

Other topics discussed included the prospects of the EU-Russian relations, EU neighborhood policy, and support to the states in the Eastern neighborhood.  
President Adamkus thanked Sweden for its good cooperation in implementing projects aimed at the development of democracy in Belarus and for its support to the European Humanities University.
