According to the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, the international community should be worried about the military tension that has sparkled in Georgia. As shown by the recent events, the situation is hardly controlled as Russian peacekeepers do not perform their mission in South Ossetia.

„Reports on gunfire opened not only on South Ossetia villages but also in other Georgian territories raises new concerns about Russian actions. It is obvious that the conflict-solution means and negotiation formats used so far have failed to give the expected results,“ noted Lithuania‘s President.

Today President Adamkus discussed the situation over the phone with the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Javier Solana and Georgia‘s President Mikheil Saakashvili.

President Adamkus underlined that Lithuania had been and would be supporting Georgia‘s territorial integrity and urged to stop military actions and to look for peaceful resolution of the conflict by any possible means.

“We ask the international community, first of all the French Presidency of the EU and the Finnish Presidency of OSCE, to take immediate action to stabilize the situation", says President Adamkus.

According to the President, today the EU must be strongly involved in the solution of the issue essential for Georgia‘s territorial integrity.

The President has informed Mr. Solana and Mr. Saakashvili that Lithuanian Foreign Minister Petras Vaitiekūnas goes to Georgia to inform EU partners about situation in Georgia on the spot.
