The President: Munich Conference – the birthplace of new ideas and solutions

Published: 7 February 2011 y., Monday

The President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė takes part in the Munich Security Conference. The discussions on the second day of the Conference focused on the establishment of the far-reaching Euroatlantic security community, the importance of democratic development in the fight against terrorism, and the significance of new security aspects such as cyber or energy security.

"The international Munich Conference is highly important not only to Europe and the rest of the world but also to Lithuania. Here we talk about common concerns ranging from ongoing conflicts in Africa, for instance in Egypt, to problems at our border, related to Belarus. We see nations and people refusing to accept the existing regimes and trying to change them and the West and the entire world responding differently than before," President Dalia Grybauskaitė said.

According to the President, it is up to each individual nation to decide what kind of government it wants and we, the West, may help any nation to mature, to learn and to get stronger but we may not dictate to any nation what particular regime or which particular leader it should select or elect.

"This also applies to Egypt and Belarus; therefore, I am happy that this maturity and this new point of view were reflected in the statements of both British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Their view also corresponds to my view concerning our neighbors. Therefore, this annual conference that is already 47 years old remains relevant and important for the whole world," the Lithuanian President said after the working sessions.

At the end of the main session of the day, Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, leader of the Munich Conference, offered a large bouquet of flowers to President Dalia Grybauskaitė, thanking her for the brave opening statement said at the dinner the day before, which, according to Ischinger, was widely discussed among participants of the Conference.
