On 1 October in Tbilisi, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Vygaudas Ušackas and the President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili discussed about Georgia’s European integration aspirations. The Minister also accepted the Georgia state award.

During the conversation with M.Saakashvili, the Minister supported Georgia’s willingness to strengthen relations with the European Union and stressed that in today’s difficult situation it would help Georgia to maintain a proper course of development, which will bring success in the future.

V.Ušackas noted that Lithuania supports the launch of fast EU-Georgia negotiations on the Association Treaty. The accord on profound and overwhelming free trade should be an integral part of it, the Minister said. He also pledged the support for Georgia, which aims for the entry into force of the EU-Georgia visa facilitation agreement as soon as possible.

During the meeting, a state award for supporting Georgia was conferred on Minister V.Ušackas by the President of Georgia.

While accepting the award, the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said that the Lithuanian and Georgian people have come a long way together, and Lithuania understands the challenges that Georgia is facing today.

“Lithuania is in solidarity with Georgia and supports its desire to strengthen its independence, to ensure the territorial integrity, to carry out democratic reforms and to deepen cooperation with the Euro-Atlantic institutions”, V.Ušackas said.

Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs is paying an official visit to Georgia on 1-2 October.
