President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė will have a meeting with the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, in Vilnius.

They will meet for a working breakfast during which they plan to discuss the current economic and financial situation in the EU, European economic recovery measures, and directions for the implementation of the EU development strategy for the coming decade. Special attention will be given to the Baltic Region energy issues, the construction of a common Lithuanian-Polish gas pipeline and electricity connections with Sweden and Poland, and prospects for the creation of an integrated European energy market.

“Fast implementation of European electricity, gas and transport infrastructure projects and integration of energy islands of the Baltic States and other EU Member States into the Western European power networks are a prerequisite for the well-being of people of the Baltic Region and for sustainable economic growth in the whole Europe,” President Dalia Grybauskaitė says.

The President underlines that a letter from the President of the European Commission dated 12 May in which integration of the Baltic Sea Region energy markets has been named as one of the top priorities of the European Commission shows the attention paid by the whole Europe to the Baltics and their problems.
