The heaviest bombardment

Published: 23 December 1999 y., Thursday

Russian military authorities have flatly disproved the information provided by some mass media about heavy artillery and aviation attacks against Grozny that presumably took place last night. According to news agency RIA-Novosti, Valentin Astafyev, Vice-Chief of the temporal press center of the United Military Alignment in the North Caucasus region, called this information "another provocation". Astafyev made a statement that in the course of the last ten days no strikes were delivered against Grozny. Astafyev emphasized that artillery and aviation attacked the specific targets alone - the militants who were trying to leave Grozny. It was Mayor of Grozny Lecha Dudaev who had reported to a correspondent of Interfax about the bombardments. According to Dudaev, "shells were bursting practically in all districts of Grozny," from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning. Dudaev stated that it was the heaviest bombardment of Grozny in the course of the last ten days. Dudaev also reported numerous victims of the bombardment but didn_t tell the precise figures, referring to the impossibility of getting information from all the districts of the city.
