Russia's Defence Minister: There Are No Russian Soldiers In Afghanistan
Published:
15 October 2001 y., Monday
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov told journalists that participation of Russian military forces in Afghanistan would be impossible. No Russian military instructors will be sent to Afghanistan to train Northern Alliance fighters to handle military equipment.
Meanwhile some Russian news agencies reported that Russian troops have already been staying near Kabul for two weeks. But Ivanov said it would be a mistake for outside powers to try to install a government in Afghanistan.
The former Soviet Union fought a decade-long war with Afghanistan and all efforts to keep pro-Soviet Afghan governments in power just failed.
