Lithuanian, Latvian agriculture ministers discuss fishing rights

The Minister for Agriculture Atis Slakteris contacted the Lithuanian Minister for Agriculture Kestutis Kristinaitis to discuss possible solutions to fishing rights disputes in the territory of the mutual sea border. Both sides agreed to assign experts to find mutually acceptable solutions.
The ministers also agreed to a regular exchange of information about developments in the fishing sector. Slakteris is convinced that the cooperation agreement will be favorable to Latvia's fishermen and that they will be able to fish in their traditional areas. According to Kristinaitis, Lithuania too is interested in finding a solution to the problem. Both countries are on their way to NATO and the European Union and need to settle issues relating to the border treaty. Negotiations on a fishing agreement between Lithuanian and Latvia ceased on May 15 due to lack of progress.
