President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus attended the commemoration of the 17th anniversary of the tragedy in Medininkai border post, where customs, police and border-control officers had been killed while on service.

Delivering a speech at the Medininkai memorial, the President noted that these people who had died for the freedom of Lithuania were the first to proclaim the determination of the State to live in freedom and independence. Their sacrifice commits other people to achieve what they have believed in.

“This foully brutal act against the State of Lithuania and the affected families heightens one of the dearest ideals – to live in accordance with high standards of decency and honour,” the President said.

The President also said he believed we would some day achieve what had been then paid in human lives. “I am confident that future generations will follow the steps of those who died for the freedom of the nation,” Mr. Adamkus said.

“We are building our State on a solid base because they have committed us to go on with what they have started,” the President underlined.
