Voronin Pins Much Hopes on Pact for Moldova

Published: 12 June 2004 y., Saturday
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin believes that his last week's initiative - to persuade the international community into signing a 'Stability and Security Pact for the Republic of Moldova' - will promote Transnistrian conflict settlement. On Thursday night, Voronin retuned home from an official visit to Slovenia, and stated to journalists here that he had enlisted support of Slovenia, "which has become a European Union member and has shown interest in this initiative". "The Pact for Moldova will become one the topics of a talk with the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine on July 3 at an informal summit of the heads of CIS states", Voronin further held. "We must resolve the Transnistrian problem, but this has to be done with a good knowledge of the situation that has developed during the conflict years. In particular, we must clear out reasons why the conflict remains unresolved. The Pact initiative should help receive answers to these questions". As was already reported by Infotag, the Moldovan President has proposed to the European Union, Russia, Ukraine and Romania to sign a document that would guarantee statehood, independence and neutrality to Moldova as well as resolution of the Transnistrian problem through federalization of the country.
