Amid Pandemic, Internet Traffic Breaks Records

Published: 9 November 2020 y., Monday

The coronavirus closed more than half of humanity at home in the spring. Today, it attacks again. Coronavirus affects Internet traffic. It has grown by a third, said the Internet provider Penki.

“Internet access during the pandemic became in demand as well as food. During isolation, it is important for people to keep abreast of the latest news. Internet traffic today corresponds to March indicators. Our company prepared for this in advance. We are ready to please any customer needs and offer tariff plans for the Internet with speeds up to 1 Gb/s,” says Andrius Rakauskas, Head of the Technical Service Department of Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras (a member of the Penki Kontinentai Group), providing fiber-optic Internet and television Penki.

In Vilnius, as well as all over the world, file sharing, social networks, and video services show the main traffic growth. The peak of activity occurs during working hours from 12 to 16 hours and in the evening hours after 19:00.

Globally, Internet traffic has increased by 40-60%. If we talk about the ranking of countries' Internet speed, it should be noted that Lithuania is one of the leaders. It ranks 27th out of 175 in the world. Analysts of the Speedtest studied the data of online speed tests and compiled a list of countries with the fastest Internet. The first place is taken by Singapore, where the average speed of the fixed Internet reaches 226.60 Mb/s, and last Turkmenistan with 3.40 Mb/s. In Lithuania, the figure is 122.04 Mb/s.

The Penki representative, speaking about the impact of the pandemic on business, notes the changed format of communication with customers. Subscribers choose remote channels for consulting and purchasing services.
