Internet connection in libraries: easier way to knowledge

Published: 5 November 2014 y., Wednesday

Rapid development of new technologies has impact on libraries as well. Here, an increasing number of technologically advanced tools is introduced in addition to paper books. Visitors of most libraries already have the opportunity to use computers and Internet connection, order the desired publications online, participate in virtual exhibitions with authors, read e-books, etc.

Free of charge access to the fastest “Skynet” Internet in Lithuania (according to the data of Net Index) is offered in 19 branches of the Central Library of Vilnius City Municipality. The first access point to “Skynet” was launched in a branch of this library in Antakalnis residential area. In 2000, a “Youth Zone” (“Jaunimo zona”) with computers and Internet access was established here.

The responsible person for cooperation and social responsibility projects, representative of Penki Kontinentai Group Julija Usova says, that libraries of today are no longer a place to merely borrow or return a book, i.e. libraries are turning into modern information centers inextricably linked to modern technologies. “With Internet connection, the range of library services has significantly expanded. Visitors have the opportunity to receive information from global sources and databases free of charge, quickly find and order books from library catalogues. With all the necessary readings and Internet connection at hand, they are also able to comfortably study, read periodicals, etc.”, said J. Usova.

According to Deputy Director of the Central Library of Vilnius City Municipality Simona Žilienė, Internet facilitates the daily work of library staff as well. “Internet makes it easier to find the necessary information, especially information contained in an electronic catalogue. Moreover, it facilitates the process of notification of visitors about opening hours and various events organized by libraries. The fact that readers can find, reserve and order books online also made the work of the library staff easier. We are glad that some of the residents of Vilnius city who used to visit our libraries on rare occasions, come here more often now”, said S. Žilienė.

According to J. Usova, modern library remains a significant cultural and educational center. “Libraries are becoming more sophisticated and rapidly changing by the day, but their role in society remains significant. Library is a place where you can find the necessary information, have a useful and purposeful leisure time, learn and discover new things, and explore the world. Meanwhile, the Internet contributes to these processes by providing an opportunity to create an open information space based on modern technologies and high-quality services”, explained J. Usova.
