Skynet First in Lithuania Tested 10 Gbps Broadband Internet Connection

Published: 4 July 2017 y., Tuesday

The Lithuanian fiber-optic broadband Internet services provider Skynet, which is owned by Penki kontinentai group of companies, has successfully tested the 10 Gbps broadband speed. This is a novelty not only in Lithuania, but also in Europe. It is expected that soon it will be available to all Skynet private and corporate customers. Back in 2008, the company has bypassed its competitors – and offered its customers 100 Mbps, and in 2012 – 1 Gbps.

"10 Gbps means the future with its latest technologies that only appear in our market. The consumers‘ demands are growing each day, they are not satisfied with the "traditional" broadband Internet; today, virtual reality becomes an integral part of our daily entertainment, so it‘s not enough to keep up with new technologies: you must get ahead. So we are proud to call Skynet an innovative Internet provider, which is again the first to experience an even faster Internet, " says Povilas Keburis, Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras head of product management department.

October 28, 1998 marked the beginning of the fiber optic broadband Internet era in Lithuania. Even today, with the advent of new and improving of the existing technologies, Skynet keeps holding its firm positions. By the way, unlike the 4G format that is gaining popularity, the amount of data is not limited in the fibre-optic Internet – while the cable offers the most reliable, the safest and the fastest data transfer as well as the best quality for the client.

According to Mr Keburis, for just a few euros a user can now get high-speed (up to 1 Gbps) fiber optic Internet – this is the best that is offered on the market today.

The 10 Gbps Internet speed is not only the fastest in Lithuania, but also in Europe.

"When testing such speed in other countries the 10G EPON passive optical network technology was used, which allows to reach data transfer rate up to 10 Gbps; however, the sending speed is limited to only 2.5 Gbps. And although the innovative 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology used by us in Skynet is similar, it allows us to reach 10 Gbps, not only when receiving, but also when sending data," says Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras chief technical officer Ignatas Girnis.

According to Mr Girnis, the test results show that we are approaching the era when all the computer data will be kept on "clouds", as the data from the network can be obtained faster than from a regular desktop computer. For example, the SSD media transmit data three times, and magnetic disk storage media – even ten times slower than was achieved during the tests.

Skynet fiber optic Broadband and interactive TV services are provided by Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras company, which is part of the Penki kontinentai group of companies. Penki kontinentai are also active in the banking technologies, payment systems, fiber optic Broadband Internet, IP television and smart housing. The group of companies offers its services in 77 world countries, focusing its attention on the Baltic and the Central Asian regions.
