Lithuania has been grieved by the heartbreaking news about the decease of Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas, former President, Prime Minister, Signatory to the Act of Independence, and the first Head of State of Lithuania after the Restoration of Independence.

Even though historical distance alone will demonstrate the true extent and impact of personalities like Brazauskas on further course of events, the significance of his actions for the modern Lithuanian history is beyond any doubt. The national revival movement, the efforts directed at getting rid of the Soviet legacy and democracy building, strengthening of the Lithuanian economy, and aspirations to integrate into the strongest defence alliances, as well as join strong political and economic structures will always be associated with the name of Algirdas Brazauskas. Historic decisions were made during his presidency and leadership of the Government, creating long-lasting implications for the future of the country. Therefore, apart from signifying the end of an individual life, the decease of Algirdas Brazauskas marks the end of an entire stage of Lithuania’s history.

Grieving over the sad loss, I express my sincere condolences and wishes of strength to the family of the deceased, his relatives and all those who mourn the demise of Algirdas Brazauskas.
