Veteran sprinter Jaan Kirsipuu of Estonia used a final burst to the finish line to capture the first stage of the 91st Tour de France cycling race.
Kirsipuu completed the 202.5 kilometer ride in four hours, 40 minutes and 29 seconds to edge Australian Robbie McEwen and Thor Hushovd of Norway in a photo-finish. But 23-year-old Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara retained the leader's yellow jersey with a two-second lead, after winning Saturday's opening time trial.
Five-time defending champion Lance Armstrong finished 48th on Sunday and is third overall. He will try to secure a record sixth consecutive victory in mountain climbs and time trials that come later.
The stage was marred by wet pavement and a number of crashes.
