Agassi faces Kim

Published: 24 August 2000 y., Thursday
Top seed Andre Agassi faces an apparently straightforward opening round clash at next week's US Open against American qualifier Alex Kim at Flushing Meadow while four-time winner Pete Sampras has the potentially tricky opener against Czech Martin Damm. Agassi, who's struggled with injury all season after completing a memorable 1999 with victory over Todd Martin in last year's final, should book a place in round two where he'll meet the winner of the clash between Frenchman Arnaud Clement and Argentina's Gaston Gaudio. Sampras, meanwhile, has been given a tough run into the last eight with Justin Gimelstob, the man he crushed in the fourth round at Wimbledon, and Germany's Tommy Haas likely opponents before a quarter-final against Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten, seeded two, will face an as yet unknown qualifier and third-seeded Magnus Norman can relish the prospect of a testing first match against American Paul Goldstein. British No. 1 Tim Henman takes on Fernando Vicente in the first round - the Spaniard edged the Englishman in five sets during their only previous encounter at the French Open earlier this year. While Greg Rusedski, struggling to rediscover the form that saw him reach the 1997 final, is paired against the Swede Magnus Gustafsson.
