CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Lazio, Spartak Moscow reach 2nd phase

Lazio recovered from conceding a first half goal to crush Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine 5-1 in Rome to finish second behind already-qualified Arsenal in group B following the Gunners' 4-2 win over Sparta Prague at Highbury. Spartak Moscow qualifed from group A despite losing 1-0 against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany where Michael Ballack scored after 52 minutes. Spartak must finish second behind already-qualified Real Madrid in the group because even though Leverkusen could finish level with it on nine points, Spartak has the better head-to-head record having beaten Leverkusen 2-0 in Moscow on September 12. No other clubs qualified on Wednesday. The nine clubs so far throught to the second phase are, from Group A: Real Madrid and Spartak Moscow; Group B: Arsenal and Lazio; Group C: Valencia; Group E: Deportivo Coruna; Group F: Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain; Group H: AC Milan.
