Tennis: Panova cruises at Volvo Open

Top-seeded Tatiana Panova of Russia beat compatriot Maria Kirilenko on Tuesday, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the second round of the $110,000 Volvo Women's Open at the Dusit Resort Hotel. Panova, the No. 24-ranked female player, beat the 15-year-old US Open junior champion Kirilenko in under an hour. Panova, 26, who hails from Moscow, will next take on Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus, who on Monday easily dismissed Zsofia Gubacsi of Hungary, 6-0, 6-2. Only one seeded player was ousted Tuesday when 121st-ranked Anastassia Rodionova of Russia defeated fourth-seeded Anca Barna of Germany, the No. 60 player in the world, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In Tuesday's other first round matches, Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic trounced Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko, 6-3, 6-3, and Stephanie Cohen Aloro of France ousted another Ukrainian, Yuliana Fedak, 6-1, 7-5, in the match between two qualifiers. Japan's Shinobu Asagoe had no problem easing past the error-prone Olga Kalyuzhnaya of Russia 6-3, 6-1, and Magdalena Grzybowska of Poland came back from a first set loss to beat Libuse Prusova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-2. 6-2.
