The extended chess game

Published: 8 September 1999 y., Wednesday
Gary Kasparov may be the world_s foremost chess player and the current world champion, but he is having a tough time conquering the Internet. Kasparov has taken on the world in a chess match that already has stretched into its third month. Anyone can log on and give Kasparov a run for his money. Just sign on to MSN Gaming Zone to put yourself in the midst of one of the greatest and most troublesome (for Kasparov) chess matches ever held. Through the Microsoft Network_s Web site, Kasparov is testing his skills against hundreds of thousands of chess enthusiasts. After three months and 37 moves, neither side has the clear advantage. Here_s how it works - Kasparov makes his move, then all the players on the worldwide team vote on a counter move. To keep wildcards and pranksters from spoiling the game, the worldwide team_s moves are monitored by a panel of four chess experts. The extended chess game has attracted more than 15 million hits on MSN_s site, and the game is now ranked as the largest interactive competition ever held. Kasparov admitted that he didn_t expect the competition to be so tough, but he said that the game is the most exciting chess match ever to take place.
