World Cup roundup

Published: 13 October 2000 y., Friday
England, where the game was invented, and the Netherlands -- one of soccer's most stylish sides -- put their presence in the 2002 World Cup in jeopardy in qualifiers Wednesday. England, in its first match since Kevin Keegan resigned after a 1-0 loss to Germany, looked disorganized in a scoreless draw against Finland in Helsinki. The match left the English at the bottom of Group 9. Playing under fill-in manager Howard Wilkinson after Kevin Keegan turned in his shock resignation on Saturday, England hardly threatened despite an attack-oriented side that included strikers Emile Heskey, Teddy Sheringham and Andy Cole. England's best chance came in the 87th when Ray Parlour hammered a 14-meter (yard) shot that struck the underside of the crossbar and landed on the line. A TV replay showed it may have crossed the line. In the 7th, Sheringham seemed to have scored but the referee called it back and awarded a free kick, ruling the Finland goalkeeper had taken Sheringham down outside the area before the shot. Portugal beat the Netherlands 2-0 in Rotterdam as Pauleta scored once and set up another. Portugal leads Group 2 with seven points and the Dutch only have four. Here's a look a the groups: Group 1: Russia 3, Luxembourg 0 Slovenia 2, Switzerland 2 Group 2: Ireland 2, Estonia 0 Netherlands 0, Portugal 2 Group 3 Iceland 1, Northern Ireland 0 Denmark 1, Bulgaria 1 Malta 0, Czech Republic 0 Group 4 Azerbaijan 0, Turkey 1 Moldova 0, Macedonia 0 Slovakia 0, Sweden 0
