Men's Discus Throw Final

Athens, August 24 – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that discus thrower Robert Fazekas from Hungary has been excluded from the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004 for an anti-doping rules violation.

Results after IOC decision:

Virgilijus Alekna (LTU) took the Olympic gold medal in the men's discus competition.

The reigning Olympic Champion immediately unleashead an Olympic record of 69.89m in round one, surpassing Lars Riedel's (GER) record 69.40m from Atlanta 1996.

Zoltan Kovago (HUN)  took the bronze medal place with a throw of 67.03.

Aleksander Tammert (EST) took the third place after round one with his opener of 66.66m.

Comments on the disqualification of Robert Fazekas

Robert Fazekas refused on 23 August to provide a complete urine sample after the men's discus throw final where he placed first. According to Article 2.3 of the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, 'refusing, or failing without compelling justification, to submit to sample collection after notification' is an anti-doping rule violation. The IOC Executive Board, after hearing the report of the Disciplinary Commission, this evening decided that Robert Fazekas -

-          is disqualified from the men’s discus throw event, where he had placed first;

-          is not awarded a gold medal or diploma;

-          is excluded from the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004; and

-          shall have his Olympic identity and accreditation card withdrawn.

-          The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is requested to modify the results of the above-noted event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.

-          This decision shall enter into force immediately.

Virgilijus Alekna. Comment on the event:

Virgilijus Alekna
Virgilijus Alekna

"It was like any other event. I knew I had to throw more than 70 metres to win the gold medal. I believe my throws were good, however you do not always win. Up until now, I managed to be consistent in my performance, throwing regularly and winning."

Aleksander Tammert (EST) took the third place after round one with his opener of 66.66m and was able to keep his placing until the fourth round when Zoltan Kovago (HUN) overtook him for the bronze medal place with a throw of 67.03.

The Hungarian was able to keep his third place, although Tammert came close with his last throw which landed outside the sector.

Vasiliy Kaptykh (BLR) was fifth with 65.10m.

Women's Heptathlon : Kluft (SWE), Skujytë (LTU), Sotherton (GBR)

Athens, 21 August -

Carolina Kluft (SWE) - gold medallist (6952 points)

Austra Skujytë (LTU) - silver medallist (6435 points)

Comment on her achievment:

"It's incredible. I can't believe it. I did not consider a silver as one of the possibilities.

On the final 800 metre race:

"I was a little worried about keeping my second spot, but I decided to just run my own race and not think about the others. I ended up with a personal best.

On the two days of competition:

"After the high jump I thought I'd screwed up again. My trainers and coaches talked to me and explained - with calculations - that a medal was still possible. With the shot put it got better and I was right on track after a personal best in the 200m."

On Kluft:

"Kluft is way out there. Although she is four years younger, all I can do is take it step by step and try to improve year by year to close the gap."

Kelly Sotherton (GBR) - bronze medallist (6424 points)

Basketball. Lithuania scores 100 to take 5th win

Athens, 23 August - Ramûnas Ðiðkauskas (LTU) scored only five points, but his final free throw with 20 seconds remaining marked the Olympic Men's Basketball competitions first 100 point game as Lithuania out-ran and out-gunned Australia 100-85.

The win gave Group B leaders Lithuania a perfect 5-0 record from preliminary play and sent them to the quarterfinals as the competition favourites alongside Spain (5-0).

The 2003 European Champions led the game 11-4 before Australia took a 19-17 lead late in the quarter and stayed within two points early in the second quarter. That was when star trio Ðarûnas Jasikevièius, Saulius Ðtombergas and Ðiðkauskas were called off the bench to spark a gamebreaking 27-5 run. giving Lithuania a commending 52-28 lead at half time.

Australia (1-4) didn’t give up, managing to cut the huge deficit to 69-62 late in the third quarter using both perimeter (Shane Heal, Glen Saville) and inside strength (Andrew Bogut).

But Lithuania was not going to relinquish its unbeaten status easily. In the last quarter Robertas Javtokas scored six of his 23 points/9 rebounds, while Ðtombergas hit two big threes and Jasikevièius reached 11 points (five of them in the last period) to edge the Boomers.

Kðyðtof Lavrinoviè scored 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds and Ðtombergas and Darius Songaila contributed 12 and 10 points respectively.

Bogut led Australia with 21 points and 9 boards, while Saville added 19 points and Heal and Matthew Nielsen had 11 points apiece.

Comments on Game Lithuania vs Australia 100-85

Darius Songaila, Forward (LTU)

"I am extremely happy that we finished without a loss. Now we have to put everything behind us, because the finals are waiting. It didn't matter for me that the game was of no importance standings-wise; I was prepared to give 100%."

Antanas Sireika, Head Coach (LTU)

"As Darius (Songaila) said, we wanted to give 100% regardless of the standings. Unfortunately, we didn't play the way I wanted for more than 50% of the game. I am disappointed especially from the performance of some players. As I did in the pre-Olympic Games, I also used today a different starting lineup, to make sure all players get minutes and are ready when we need them. In these Olympics, no result can be taken as a surprise, because any team can beat any other team, and this includes the United States as well. Any opinion created from previous Olympic tournaments changes completely here. The gap between the NBA and the rest of the world seems to be closing in very fast. The Olympics are a huge event and we are very happy to be here. If I had to think of a flaw, I'd say that we were promised CDs of video info in 24 hours, which is very important to us, but they were not on time."
